Westerland Resort Beach Webcams on Sylt
Watch the panoramic live feed in this collection of webcams streaming from the Westerland Resort for a few minutes and if you’re observant, you may well come to a rapid conclusion. While this stretch of beach is comparable, and in some cases better, to any in the Med, not many folks risk stripping off to take a dip. That’s because the sea that laps against the sand here isn’t the Mediterranean or even the Ligurian. It’s the North Sea which, even in the height of summer, is frigid enough to turn you blue in two minutes.
The Westerland Resort is on the island of Sylt, a German island that’s located so far north it’s almost in Denmark. Sylt is one of the larger islands in the North Frisian archipelago and covers an area of around a hundred square kilometres. It has a varied topography which ranges from mudflats to luxury golf courses, but one of its main attractions are its forty-plus kilometres of unspoilt beaches. It’s a place to get back to nature especially if you’re a naturist who can withstand a chilly North Sea breeze.
While most of the island’s acreage is now protected, there has been some development there and Westerland is one of them. It may not have been given the title of the island’s capital, but Westerland is where it’s all happening and where visitors to the island have a tendency to congregate. You won’t see any nightlife shenanigans on these cams though. What you may spot during the summer months are a few bare buttocks when the nudists emerge from their strandkorbs, a type of beach shelter, to take a stroll or wash the sand from between their toes.
