Webcam Views of Knokke-Heist
There’s a lot of action on this collection of webcams being streamed from Knokke-Heist. Most of that action is generated by the cams zooming in and out and whizzing around as they change angle. Stay with them though and you might see some surfers heading out to catch a wave, when the water isn’t as flat as a pancake, or testing their skills at the cable park where no waves are required.
The town of Knokke, in the Knokke-Heist region of northern Belgium, although it’s bordered by the more often than not frigid North Sea, is a popular seaside resort. If it’s the glass dome that draws your attention more than the greyish sea and stretch of sand bordering it, that’s not surprising. While it’s not quite as spectacular as the Louvre’s pyramid and doesn’t act as the entrance to a museum, but rather an underground car park, it was meant to be eye-catching and certainly is.
Not only is the dome eye-catching, it’s architecturally unique and is surrounded by an eye-boggling plaza designed to replicate the squares on a chessboard. What’s so special about the dome? There’s nothing holding it up other than the connections on the metal framework keeping the two-thousand plus glass panes in place. If you’ve got a Meccano building set from your childhood stuffed in a cupboard somewhere, you could get it out and have a go at constructing your own dome as that’s where the design idea came from. Our guess is, it probably won’t work out to be quite as simple as it sounds.
