It may be New York that’s known as the city that never sleeps, but watch this live feed of Philadelphia on and off over a twenty-four hour period and you’ll soon realise, this city doesn’t sleep either. And that goes for the entire urbanisation not just the, rapidly becoming infamous worldwide, Kensington Avenue. In all honesty, Philadelphia is notable for much more than its less-than-desirable skid row street.
Philadelphia was founded in the late 17th century. In less than four centuries its urban growth has spread to cover around a hundred and forty square miles. It’s now home to well over one and a half million people making it one of the most populous cities in the US. Over the years, many of its inhabitants have left their mark on, not just the city’s history, but that of America itself. If you’re a history fan, you’ll enjoy researching those folks and the various events that took place there in the past for yourself. There’s far too many to go into detail about here.
Not only has Philadelphia been prominent in American history, it’s also renowned for a certain gastronomical invention that has become a staple of the country’s cuisine. While who served up the first Philly Cheesesteak is a matter for debate, the melted cheese doused steak stuffed in a hotdog bun was definitely invented in the city sometime around the 1930s. Once you’ve tried one, it’s easy to understand why the simple combination of ingredients has stood the test of time and well-deserves to have its own mention in the city’s annals of history.
