Olyphant Train Station Webcam
Drop into this live feed of the Olyphant Train Station, yes, read Oly-phant not ele-phant, and it may well leave you a little perplexed. Why? Because you may find yourself questioning why there are more cars and trucks whizzing past than there are trains and why is there still a Christmas tree in the middle of a traffic island when the festive season was over and done with weeks ago. If you do find yourself pondering about those anomalies, don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Olyphant is in Lackawanna County, and yes, that just goes to show they love unusual names in this part of Pennsylvania. Olyphant was once known as Queen City, although it’s never been a city. It’s a borough of the nearby city of Scranton. While it may be classed as a borough, that doesn’t phase the folks of Olyphant having aspirations for their urbanization and as you can see on the station signage, it’s still Queen City at heart.
While Queen City, or better said, Olyphant, may be a quiet suburb of Scranton, these days it’s home to around five-thousand people and has its own unique history. The station stands as a reminder of the borough’s past connections to the coal mining industry, but not so much to the person the borough is now named after, George Talbot Olyphant, who was more into man-made waterways than railroad tracks.
