Black Hawk Bridge Webcam in Lansing

If you click into this live feed during the hours of darkness and see nothing more than a black screen with the odd coloured light here and there, don’t despair. While it might be nighttime in Mississippi, there is still a way to satisfy your curiosity about the Black Hawk Bridge How? Click on the timelapse button at the bottom of the cam screen and you’ll be able to watch the construction of the bridge almost from start to finish. Which, in all honesty, is a lot more exciting than viewing the completed structure in the dark.

The original Black Hawk Bridge spanned the infamous Mississippi River and served as a crossing point between Lansing in Iowa and its neighbouring state of Wyoming. Time and traffic took their toll on the bridge that first opened for use in the early 1930s and even though it had been renovated several times, the powers to be decided that replacing it with a new one was in order. And that’s what they did.

The new Black Hawk Bridge, while looking similar, is slightly larger and quite a bit stronger. Let’s say, that while it’s not exactly an engineering term, the new bridge isn’t a twin, but more of a big brother. In case you still haven’t satiated your curiosity, the old bridge was named in honour of Chief Black Hawk, the early 19th century leader of the Native Sauk Tribe. And as there’s no mention anywhere of a change of name, it seems the new bridge will be too. If we’re wrong on that score then let us know in the comments.
