Bastia Poretta Airport Webcam on Corsica

If you were hoping for some serious aviation excitement, you may well have chosen the wrong airport webcam to watch. The Bastia Poretta Airport, located in northern Corsica, has one runway and caters to well under one and a half million passengers a year. Many of the flights arriving and departing from here are seasonal so drop back during the summer months and you’ll see a lot more action.

Bastia Poretta Airport first opened for commercial flights in 1947. Up to then, and specifically during WW2, it was used as a military base for US forces. When it first opened, the airport retained the appearance of an airfield and had none of the facilities it has today. Its progress to modernity began in the late 50s and continued to the mid-80s when its runway was extended to two-thousand, five-hundred and twenty metres in preparation of catering for larger aircraft.

With those larger planes flying in, renovation of the existing terminal was required to accommodate the increase in passengers. That work was initially completed before 2010. But, with passenger traffic ever on the increase, quite possibly due to airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet offering it as an economy-price flight destination from various countries, a decade later the airport’s terminal expansion began all over again. Will it stop there? Probably not. Once even more people discover just how beautiful the Haute Corse region of this French island, which has a definite Italian je ne sais quoi, is, they’ll need a terminal building triple the size it is now.
