Bald Eagle Webcams in the Kisatchie National Forest

Kisatchie National Forest covers almost two-and a half thousand square kilometres of terrain in central Louisiana. How the park rangers have managed to locate the trees where some of the local bald eagles have decided to build their nests is quite amazing. But find them they did and those eagle-eyed guardians of the wild secured not just one cam on each, but two so you can see these incredible birds flying in and out of their enormous twiggy habitats.

The bald eagle, the raptor adopted as America’s national bird, is as iconic as the Statue of Liberty although facially, with its hooked beak, not quite as attractive. Bald eagles feed mostly on fish and need to be near water to be able to survive. They’ve chosen these nesting locations well as there’s no shortage of rivers, lakes and bayous within the boundaries of these wooded lands where they can hunt. Check out nest E3 and you’ll probably agree, that is a nest with, what can only be called, an eagle’s version of a penthouse view.

Bald eagles have a tendency to lay their eggs during the latter part of winter. That’s a lot earlier than other raptors so to get to see eggs you’ll need to revisit the feeds around the beginning of March. Incubation takes a few weeks, and once hatched the chicks mature at an incredible speed. If you join the cam and see nothing more than an eagle parent perched on a nearby branch, it usually means their offsprings have flown the coop. Yes, just like humans when their teenagers have left home, they’ll be sitting there contemplating what they’re going to do for the next few months now they’re empty nesting.
