Akureyri Town Webcam

View this live feed streaming from Akureyri in northern Iceland during daylight hours and you’ll see a pretty town built on the shores of the scenic Eyjafjörður Fjord. View it any time from dusk onwards and you may think you’re witnessing a mysterious and inexplicable phenomena as it occurs. Wait for it and it will happen.

When that cigar-shaped red glow begins to appear in the sky above Akureyri and gets brighter and brighter it may leave you wondering if you’re watching a UFO hovering over the town, a comet passing by, part of a spaceship burning up as it enters the atmosphere or even the Aurora Borealis having a bad day. Our guess is that it’s none of the previous, but may be a smudge on the cam lens causing an unusual reflection. If you have a different theory, let us know in the comments.

Akureyri may only be around a hundred or so kilometres from the Arctic Circle, but compared to other parts of the country, it has a surprisingly mild climate. That, the excellent fishing and the ice-free bay could well be the reasons why hardy Vikings decided to stay there over twelve hundred years ago. These days, apart from the resident population, it’s hardy travellers who venture there to appreciate the surrounding countryside and to see the Northern Lights. Pop back to view the cam between August to April and you may well see that natural phenomena too so long as that big red blob doesn’t overshadow it.
