South Dakota is in the Midwestern region of the US. Pierre is the state capital and Sioux Falls is the state’s largest city. The Missouri River divides the state into East River and West River. Ranching is the predominant activity and most South Dakotans live a rural lifestyle. The best known tourist attraction is Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills where a giant granite sculpture of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln was carved by Gutzon Borglum in 1927. Together these four Presidents represent the first 150 years of the history of the United States.
