The island of Cyprus is in the eastern Mediterranean. Due to its sunny year-round climate it is a popular tourist destination with families and retirees looking to escape the depressing winter weather elsewhere. Its ancient history dates back to 10,000 BC with ancient water wells, the Tombs of Kings and well-preserved Neolithic villages. While the northern side of the island is governed by Turkey, the southern side is a Republic and is better developed, particularly for tourism. Nicosia is the capital city of southern Cyprus.
