Views from Mirador Balcon de Zamora Restaurant in Valleseco

You’d need to make a lengthy road trip from the resort areas of Gran Canaria to discover the Balcon de Zamora restaurant. It’s tucked away on the side of a mountain road, the GC21, between the villages of Valleseco and Teror. Is it worth the trek? The answer to that is a resounding – yes.

Forget finding any international influence on the menu at the Balcon de Zamora because the dishes offered here are traditional Canarian ones. No, they won’t look as though they’ve been plated by a Michelin-starred chef. They’re served the way they should be and always have been so if you’re after fancy, you’ll be in the wrong place. But, take into account the fact that this rural restaurant has been open since 1958 and you’ll know you’re going to be in for something good.

What can you expect to gorge on, other than the panoramic views of the Gran Canaria countryside from the terrace? Think local cheese served with jam, salty small potatoes with a spicy garlic sauce, goat stew or some hearty soups known as potajes which are perfect for those Canarian winter moments when the clouds descend to head level.
