Assiniboia School Commemorative Monument Webcam

View this live feed of the Assiniboia School Commemorative Monument during the hours of darkness and you could be forgiven for thinking you’re viewing Stonehenge illuminated in all its monolithic glory. You’re not. This is something completely different, more modern and a few thousand miles away from the Neolithic structure that adorns Salisbury Plain in the UK, but it has an equally, if not more, tangible history.

This recently constructed monument stands as a reminder of how the majority can treat those from a minority group. It occupies grounds in Winnipeg, Canada, where there was once a residential school for First Nation, or better said, the Indigenous youth of the Native Anishinaabe and Cree tribes. The school operated for several decades, segregating the young students from society, their culture and from their families.

While in today’s world diversity may be celebrated in all shapes and forms, it hasn’t always been so and this monument is a testimony to that. Let’s hope that in a few thousand years, just like Stonehenge, it will still be standing and serve as a reminder that we are, as people, all equal, no matter what our ethnicity is.
