Freedom Square Webcam in Volyně
Observing this unusually shaped square, you might come to the conclusion that in the town of Volyně, Czechia, they like to do things just that little bit differently. That is really not the case. The installation of this ‘square’ in the 19th century was one of the last major changes the town went through. And, as far as the historic centre is concerned, it will probably be the last as it’s been designated an urban monument.
Historically, Volyně’s growth and prosperity was hampered by the Thirty Year War which took place in the 17th century. Since then, even though other human-initiated disasters like military occupation and fires have struck, Volyně has remained pretty much unchanged. Even the population count has barely fluctuated over time and stays at more or less steady three-thousand inhabitants.
All of the buildings surrounding the square are of historic significance, but none are quite as outstanding as the town hall which was built in the early 16th century. Also of importance in the square is the 18th century Marian column with its statues of three saints, but which you can’t see on this live feed as it’s hidden among the trees. The one thing that has to be said is – non-square town squares are far more interesting to view than square squares so thanks to the 19th century Czechia architect for thinking outside the box.
